The New York Jets had legitimate Super Bowl aspirations after acquiring four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers this offseason. Things changed four minutes into their season.
Colin Kaepernick reached out to the Jets about a spot on their practice squad following fellow quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury. In a letter released by the rapper J Cole on Instagram, Kaepernick – who addresses Jets general manager Joe Douglas – says he would be “honored” to join the team and “lead the practice squad” with “the sole mission of getting your defense ready each week.”
The Jets signed veteran Trevor Siemian instead.
That signing sparked a reaction from Jemele Hill on X. The former ESPN writer and current The Atlantic contributor riped the Jets for their decision while pointing out facts.
“The Jets instead chose to sign Trevor Siemian who ::checks notes:: is 31 years old, and hasn’t won a game since 2017. But sure, Colin isn’t playing because it’s a football decision,” Hill wrote.
One X user then brought up the nature of NFL business and Kaepernick’s protesting during the 2016 season to explain his unemployment. Hill fired back.

“If only Colin Kaepernick had assaulted or abused a woman. Because it sure is interesting how they don’t care about backlash then, and how it might negatively impact their business,” Hill said. “Need I also remind you, Kaep’s Nike merchandise sold out and during his protest he had the second-highest jersey sales in the NFL. So is it really about business or about the fact NFL owners have chosen whose business they value more?”
NFL fans clearly were’t impressed with Hill’s rant, so they fired back:
Kaepernick himself said a “confident” Wilson “has the tools” to lead the Jets to the Super Bowl. But if he is unable to do that, Kaepernick also provided the Jets with both “worst case” and “best case” scenarios with his “risk-free contingency plan.”
He made it clear that despite not playing since 2016, he has kept up his training every day for six years.
Kaepernick last played seven years ago, shortly after he became a household name following his protests during the national anthem.
Following Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles injury in the team’s opening game of the year, the Jets – who lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday to drop to 1-2 on the year – have been forced to turn to Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback, who has shown nothing to give them the confidence that he can be the man going forward.
