Seattle should consider adding a former Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowl linebacker, a popular sports personality and ex-Seahawk says.
Former Washington State standout wide receiver Michael Bumpus, who played one season for the Seahawks in 2008, is now a radio host for 710 ESPN Seattle. Recently, Bumpus suggested that the Seahawks pursue ex-Cowboys’ star Jaylon Smith:
“You’ve got the OG Bobby Wagner – glad you are here. You’ve got Devin Bush who is probably going to start. You’ve got Jon Rhattigan who is was a backup. Nick Bellore does a bit of everything – I like him better at fullback. And then you have (undrafted rookie free agent) Cam Bright.
What I need is a guy to be a depth piece who’s been there who’s done that. And there’s a man by the name of Jaylon Smith. who is a free agent right now…
You have Devin Bush to start and obviously Bobby Wagner is gonna start, but you need a solid backup. I like Nick Bellore, I like Rhattigan, but I want to see a true linebacker, a guy who’s been there, who’s done that. You’ve got to take a look at Jaylon Smith.”
The Seahawks were one of the most active teams this offseason, bringing back Bobby Wagner after his one-year stint with the Los Angeles Rams. They also signed former first-round pick Devin Bush Jr. and ex-Denver Broncos’ standout defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones.
At the draft, GM John Schneider used the No. 5 selection (courtesy of the Denver Broncos) on highly-touted cornerback Devon Witherspoon. The latter joins a secondary headlined by rising star corner Tariq Woolen and veteran Pro Bowl safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs.
Smith was a second-round pick of the Cowboys (34th overall) in 2016. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2019 after tallying 2.5 sacks, one interception, nine pass defenses, two forced fumbles and 142 combined tackles.

But Smith was never able to build off his career year, and he was released in the midst of the 2021 season. He played two games for the Green Bay Packers and four for the New York Giants, who brought him back for the 2022 season.
The Seahawks have nothing to lose in giving Smith a chance. Pete Carroll has never been afraid to try out reclamation projects, and if he gave Smith an opportunity, perhaps both sides would be rewarded.
