Smith was trending in the right direction following the final preseason game. Smith tied with rookie linebacker Nephi Sewell for a team-high five tackles Sunday, including a team-high two tackles for loss.
Smith had made a strong impression in his short time in New Orleans but not enough to make the initial 53-man roster.
It’s still possible the Saints bring him back as he is eligible for a practice squad spot and does not have to clear waivers.
