The Indianapolis Colts ultimately decided to hold on to Jonathan Taylor after making the decision to trade him by this Tuesday.
The running back has been at odds with the team all summer and was given permission to seek a trade earlier this month. However, the Colts did not receive an offer they felt presented matching value and Taylor will remain put for the time being, though he should miss the first four games of the season as he remains on the physically unable to play list.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the teams never got close to a deal because the Colts wanted wide receiver Jaylen Waddle included in the package for Taylor. The Dolphins were obviously unwilling to pay Indy’s price because there’s just no way a team would give up a premium wideout to bring in a running back, as good as he may be.
Waddle, who had a breakout year in 2022, plays in a position that trumps Taylor’s in value and is under contract for two more years, while there’s a fifth-year option the Dolphins could pick up.
The WR played in all 17 games for the Dolphins last season, catching 75 of the 117 passes thrown to him for 1356 yards and eight touchdowns.
The demand also suggests that the Colts didn’t really want to trade their RB as they must have known Miami would never bite.
