On August 13, 2019, the NFL announced that it would be entering a partnership with Roc Nation, which is founded by hip hop artist and businessman Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.
The partnership caught everybody by surprised and Jay-Z got heavy backlash from a bunch of critics that included Eric Reid who stated at the time, “Jay-Z claimed to be a supporter of Colin — wore his jersey, told people not to perform at the Super Bowl because of the treatment that the NFL did to Colin,” Reid said. “And now he’s going to be a part-owner — it’s kind of despicable,” said Reid.
Fast forward to November and Jay-Z reportedly played a huge part in getting Kaepernick an opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL.
NFL.com’s Rapoport revealed that Hov potentially used his position with the NFL to sway teams into taking a look at the quarterback. “I am also told that JAY-Z—who has been working with the NFL on some social justice initiatives—was involved in this and pushed this idea to some extent,” Rapoport said.
Kaepernick’s impending workout might prove that his work with the NFL’s social justice ventures isn’t just all talk.
