The Seattle Seahawks may have to begin the 2023 season without one of their highly-touted rookies.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Seahawks’ wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba underwent wrist surgery after suffering an injury in the team’s Saturday evening preseason victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Schefter added that there’s “a chance” Smith-Njigba will return for Week 1.
Seattle used its initial round one selection (sixth overall, courtesy of the Denver Broncos in the Russell Wilson trade) on Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon. With the No. 20 selection, they took Smith-Njigba.
The Ohio State product was the first wideout taken in the 2023 Draft. The three picks that followed were also wide receivers — Quentin Johnston to the Los Angeles Chargers, Zay Flowers to the Baltimore Ravens and Jordan Addison to the Minnesota Vikings.
A hamstring injury limited Smith-Njigba to three total games in his final season of college football. Back in 2021, he racked up 95 catches for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns.
