The New York Giants beat the franchise tag deadline to get a long-term deal done with Daniel Jones, reaching an agreement on a four-year, $160 million deal with their franchise quarterback minutes before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline passed. Jones will get $82 million fully guaranteed.
Not everybody thought he was good enough to get a deal that big.
The Baltimore Ravens announced Tuesday they used the franchise tag Lamar Jackson, which got Chicago Bears safety Jaquan Brisker to respond to one of the tweets about Jackson by comparing him to Jones and calling the New York Giants’ signal-caller “trash.”
While Jones appeared to turn the corner last season and led New York to the playoffs, his resume is nowhere near what Jackson has accomplished. The Ravens quarterback won the 2019 MVP and is one of the best players in the entire league when healthy.
Since the Giants were able to get a deal done with Jones, New York placed the franchise tag on Saquon Barkley, which gives him a guaranteed $10.091 million in 2023. The Giants now have until July 17 to work out a long-term deal with Barkley.
In 2022, playing on an expiring contract, Jones totaled career highs with 3,205 passing yards and 708 rushing yards while leading the Giants to their first playoff appearance since 2016.
