It’s been a wonderful 16-and-a-half hours for the Detroit Lions.
First, they throttled the archrival Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on “Thursday Night Football” to claim sole possession of first place in the NFC North.
Then on Friday afternoon, Dan Campbell and company learned that second-year wide receiver Jameson Williams will be back in Week 5 after the NFL made significant changes to its policy on gambling.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Williams and Tennessee Titans’ offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere have been reinstated by the league following gambling violations. Both were handed six-game suspensions earlier this offseason, but the league’s gambling policy changes have ended their respective bans at four games.
Williams is now eligible to return for the Lions’ Week 5 home contest against the Carolina Panthers next Sunday (1:00 p.m. EST). It’s a welcoming development for a Lions team that looks every bit like a playoff contender heading into October.
As noted by ESPN, the league’s new gambling policies outline that a player who places a bet involving his own team will be given a minimum two-year suspension. A player who gambles on another NFL game will be given at least a one-year ban.

Williams played six games for the Lions last year, and his one catch was a 43-yard touchdown.
