There’s a rumor going around that the Minnesota Vikings are talking to the New Orleans Saints about a blockbuster trade involving a quarterback.
Minnesota lost starting quarterback Kirk Cousins for the year in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers with a torn Achilles. Minny (4-4) has won three in a row to get to .500 and back into the playoff hunt, so it makes sense for GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to buy ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
According to college football analyst C.J. Golson, the Vikings and Saints have discussed a trade that would see Jameis Winston go to Minnesota.
It hasn’t been confirmed by other NFL reporters or insiders if the two sides are indeed talking about a Winston trade, but it does make sense. The Saints are obviously committed to offseason free agent signing Derek Carr, and Winston has 80 career starts on his résumé.
The Saints brought back Winston for 2023 on a restructured deal. He’s a pending free agent and shouldn’t cost much in a trade as a backup, so the first overall pick of 2015 would be the ideal trade target for Minnesota.
Winston would have a superb supporting cast led by superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson, rookie standout Jordan Addison and two-time Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson. Not to mention that the Vikings have a very manageable schedule the rest of the way.
