Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been advised to sit out the start of the season and stay away until after Week 5 if he has to.
The QB is dealing with a calf strain, having worryingly done down in training late last month. There were initial fears over a possible season-ending injury. But those were allayed after it was revealed that the Pro Bowler will only be out for weeks.
Teammate Ja’Marr Chase has revealed having encouraged Burrow to sit out the first few weeks of the upcoming campaign in order to make sure he’s okay. Speaking on NFL Network, the wide receiver recalled his own experience, noting he took an extra game to recover from a hip injury last season.
“I told him, in all honesty, I don’t want him there,” Chase remarked. “You don’t want to cause problems later in the season. As long as you’re there after Week Five and on, we’re good, brother.”
Burrow’s recovery timeline is still unknown and the Bengals could start backup QB Trevor Siemian in his place for their opener against the Cleveland Browns on September 10.
While Siemian has proven himself a solid backup, fans will be worried if the team has to rely on him for multiple games to start the term.
