The Washington Commanders have surprisingly opted to release a quarterback who had a very impressive preseason.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jake Fromm is being shown the exit door after putting together a solid spell, having played in all three of the Commanders’ preseason fixtures. The player also led a fourth-quarter comeback against the Baltimore Ravens that ended a 24-game preseason win streak.
Fromm’s last game saw him complete 13-of-18 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, he completed 28-of-41 attempts in preseason, adding three touchdowns and a single interception. The Commanders won all three games, a good sign ahead of the upcoming season.
To be fair, though, the 25-year-old would have had a hard time making the final roster given that Sam Howell was named Washington’s starting QB while the team also brought Jacoby Brissett in as a backup.
There’s hope Fromm could end up on another team as the NFL has introduced a rule that will allow teams to dress a third QB on game days even though they don’t count towards a roster spot. This does leave him as an option for the Commanders, though he would have to join their practice squad if that ends up being the case.
Any team is permitted to claim the signal-caller following Washington’s decision to waive him. He can also fish with any team if he goes unclaimed from waivers.
