A New Orleans Saints defensive end selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft has opted to call it quits at the age of 25, joining two other players to retire in their 20s over a 24-hour span.
NFL careers are relatively short, yet it’s always surprising when they last just a few years, even more so when the player is the one who makes the decision.
This past Sunday, the Saints placed DE Jabari Zuniga on the reserve/retired list, marking the end of his career by his own choice. Zuniga, who turns 26 in August, has chosen to leave football, though we can only speculate on the reason.
It could be health-related, but he could have simply decided on another career path.
The New York Jets picked Zuniga in the third round in 2020 and waived him last September. He joined the Seattle Seahawks practice squad before the Saints signed him to their own. He was brought back to battle for a roster spot this offseason and has since decided to walk away from the NFL.
The 25-year-old made 12 appearances, earning $2 million as a professional.
