JJ Watt is dropping some inside information now that he is retired from the NFL.
The recently retired NFL defensive end took to Twitter to issue a warning about free agency as well as the NFL Draft. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and five-time Pro Bowler discussed the nature of how rumors spread around NFL reporting circles.
“NFL Free Agency/Draft Reminder: If you’re hearing a “rumor” it’s because someone wants you to hear that rumor for one reason or another, or someone is purely guessing,” Watt said. “If people want to keep something quiet, they absolutely can. It’s 100% possible to do deals without any leaks.”
NFL insiders have been accused of basically doing PR work for agents trying to get their clients better deals or teams trying to improve their own leverage. It has always been the case and will likely never change.
Watt may be referencing the contract situation of Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson. After failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension, the Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson.
He is set to make just over $32 million in 2023. He is free to negotiate with other teams. The Ravens will have the opportunity to match any offer sheet or receive two first-round picks as compensation.
