The NFL could eventually expand to 40 teams, according to league insider Mike Florio.
Florio plies his trade for NBC’s ProFootballTalk and typically has the inside beat on NFL affairs. He’s considered a top news source and is one of the most well-informed media personalities out there.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Florio predicted that the league will slowly expand to introduce an additional eight franchises.
“I think it is coming. I think they’re going to start moving that number from 32 to 34, to 36, 38, eventually 40,” he said.
Should this come to fruition, a number of cities across the United States could experience some exciting times. With just 32 teams in the league as things stand, there are plenty of fans around the country who have no choice but to support teams they have no affiliation with in terms of proximity.
Of course, the NFL is still leagues away from 40 teams, but we could see one or two cities end up with their own franchises over the span of the next few years.

Florio reckons good quarterbacks are vital to the success of any NFL team, though it should go without saying. But he’s also pointed out that there might be a struggle to find enough good QBs at any one time to make it interesting.
“Quarterbacks are the key,” he noted. “Is there ever going to be enough quarterbacks for there to be 40 NFL teams? I think that would be the ultimate maximum number.”
There have been rumors pertaining to the possibility of a four-team division in Europe. While this is a logistical challenge in itself, Florio says he thinks the league could make it happen.
