The Carolina Panthers, aiming to strengthen their team, have made a big commitment to running back Chuba Hubbard, who was chosen in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has become a top performer. Hubbard, now 25, is having his career-best season so far. He is averaging 5.0 yards per carry with 665 rushing yards, putting him fifth in the NFL, and has scored five rushing touchdowns. Some experts question why the Panthers are investing so much in a running back when the value of this position has been decreasing in the league. Nevertheless, Hubbard’s contract, with a base value of $33.2 million and $15 million guaranteed, puts him among the top 10 highest-paid running backs in terms of both average annual value (AAV) and total guarantees. His AAV of $8.3 million is just below stars like Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley, marking him as one of the league’s best-paid backs.
This extension represents a shift in the Panthers’ strategy, focusing on building stability for the future. Hubbard appreciated the team’s trust in him, saying, “I’ve always wanted to provide for my family… I want to be a Panther for life.” Although some question the decision to extend Hubbard’s contract after drafting Brooks, the Panthers believe Hubbard brings essential consistency.
