John Robinson Had A Storied Football Career
Robinson’s journey in football began humbly as an assistant coach at Oregon in 1960. His exceptional understanding of the game led USC to bring him on as an offensive coordinator in 1972. He had a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders as their running backs coach. In 1976, he returned to USC as head coach. He made a huge impact, leading the Trojans to the 1978 national championship. Over two stints (1976-1982 and 1993-1997), he also won five Pac-10 titles.
Under his leadership, USC triumphed in eight bowl games, including four Rose Bowl victories, making him one of the most successful coaches in college football history. His college career concluded with a 104-35-4 record. His legendary status earned him a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

Leading The Los Angeles Rams To Success
Following his remarkable first stint at USC, Robinson moved to the NFL as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 1983. Over eight seasons, he guided the Rams to six playoff appearances and two NFC Championship games, instilling a toughness and resilience that defined his coaching style.

Returning To College Football At UNLV
Robinson’s final coaching role came at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he served as head coach from 1999 to 2004. Although UNLV didn’t reach the same heights as his USC teams, Robinson’s impact as a mentor was just as meaningful. His passion for teaching and developing young athletes continued to shine as he coached players who admired him as a coach and mentor.
Passing Due To Health Complications
According to USC, John Robinson passed away on November 11 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, following complications from pneumonia. Also, the Los Angeles Rams silently honored Robinson before their Monday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins. “We are heartbroken,” the Rams shared in a statement, acknowledging Robinson’s remarkable contributions, including his record wins for the franchise and his national championship win with USC.
Robinson’s wife, Beverly, his four children, two stepchildren, and ten grandchildren survive him. His family will honor his wishes and celebrate his life after the college football season concludes.
