In a shocking move, the Houston Texans have released team captain and Linebacker Christian Kirksey, according to reports from NFL Insider, Ian Rapoport.
Kirksey, 30, was coming off of a highly productive season, with 124 combined tackles, 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Kirksey played 29 games for the Texans and was a valuable veteran leader for the young franchise, and was a contender for the 2022 Walter Peyton Man of the Year award.
The release is likely due to a strained hamstring Kirksey suffered. He missed most of the team’s training camp while recovering. The team also released Cornerback Desmond King.
The Texans are in the middle of a rebuild after trading Quarterback Deshaun Watson in 2022. In the 2023 NFL draft, the team selected their new franchise Quarterback in CJ Stroud as well as top Defensive End Will Anderson Jr in back-to-back picks.
The Texans’ move is an odd one considering that veteran leadership is imperative for the growth of young players. In a franchise that has lacked stability, veterans like Kirksey provide valuable lessons and guidance, which would’ve helped players like Anderson develop over time.

The Texans are looking at another high draft pick this season and will likely sit at the bottom of the division.
Kirksey will likely find a place in another team quickly, as his play last season and respected personality will elevate teammates.
