The Houston Texans have fired head coach Lovie Smith. The 64-year-old was believed to be in fear of losing his job ahead of the last game of the season and the team’s marginal victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday was unfortunately not enough to save his job.
According to NFL sources, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon would be the favorite to fill the role after Houston opted to move on from their head coach.
The Texans posted the league’s worst record in what was Smith’s first term in charge, with the team going 3-13-1. Multiple sources have named Gannon as the No.1 candidate as it pertains to the job opening, as he impressed management in two interviews conducted before they promoted Smith to the head coaching position last offseason.
Other candidates include Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Gannon also held interviews with the Broncos and Minnesota Vikings during the most recent hiring cycle and is said to have “knocked it out of the park” in his meetings with the teams.
“He knows the answer before you even ask him the question,” a member of the NFL search committee was quoted as saying.
