With starting quarterback C.J. Stroud in concussion protocol, the Houston Texans are adding extra quarterback insurance for Week 16.
Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Texans have signed former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad. Boyle was let go by the Jets after losing both his starts (against the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons).
In his three game appearances with the Jets this season, Boyle completed 62.3 percent of pass attempts for 360 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. His struggles prompted the Jets to go back to Zach Wilson, who was previously benched in favor of Boyle.
Stroud suffered a concussion in Houston’s Week 14 road loss to the Jets and had to miss Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans. Veteran Case Keenum started in place of Stroud and led Houston to a season-saving 19-16 win in overtime.
The No. 2 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft has been far-and-away the best rookie QB this season, completing 62.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,631 yards and 20 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
Houston enters Sunday’s pivotal Week 16 home game against the Cleveland Browns in a three-way tie with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars for first in the AFC South.
