Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is reportedly getting close to receiving clearance for Sunday’s must-win Week 17 contest against the AFC South rival Tennessee Titans.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Stroud is out of the NFL’s concussion protocol and is set to meet with reporters later today. Stroud has missed Houston’s last two games with a concussion that he suffered in Week 14 against the New York Jets.
The Texans (8-7) enter Week 17 in a three-way tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts for tops in the AFC South. The Jags and Colts will face the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively, on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Stroud will likely win 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after piecing together a remarkable campaign on a Houston team that entered the year with minimal expectations.
Stroud has gone 7-6 as Houston’s starter, completing 62.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,631 yards and 20 touchdowns against only five interceptions. Stroud set the record for most pass attempts to begin a career without an interception at 191, breaking the record previously held by Dallas Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott in 2016.
On top of that, Stroud threw for a QB single-game record 470 passing yards in a Nov. 5 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
