Earlier this year, the University of Houston reclaimed the “Luv Ya Blue” colors made famous by Earl Campbell and Warren Moon. They wore their uniforms against the University of Texas – San Antonio.
This past weekend, the Titans decided to revive the “Luv Ya Blue” days in Nashville, a city where most NFL fans probably weren’t Oilers fans back when Earl Campbell and Bum Phillips helped define Houston sports fandom.
That fact does not matter to the league as they are now making sure the Cougars do not wear those jerseys anymore.
The NFL has threatened legal action against the University of Houston in the form of a cease-and-desist letter over the football program’s use of throwback uniforms, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The Chronicle obtained a copy of the NFL’s letter that cited Houston’s “blatant copying” of the Oilers uniforms and also demanded that the school halt sales of any merchandise and remove any social media posts or other branding related to the uniforms.
It should be noted that the university did not explicitly reference the Oilers or “Luv Ya Blue” when it unveiled the uniforms ahead of the season opener against UTSA.

The Tennessee Titans, which played in Houston as the Oilers until the franchise relocated in 1996, wore Oilers throwbacks in Sunday’s win against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Titans will also wear those uniforms when they play the Houston Texans in December.
