Kendrick Lamar headlined the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday night, but he won’t get a cent for his performance.
While Apple Music pays $50 million a year to sponsor the show, Lamar won’t be collecting any checks after doing the honors this year.
The “Not Like Us” artist didn’t appear to strike a chord with fans on the night, based on the social media reactions. Plenty of viewers felt like the performance was flat, while many slammed it as the worst Super Bowl halftime performance of all time, but that’s not why Kendrick isn’t getting paid.
Why Kendrick Lamar Performed For Free At Super Bowl 59
While it’s easy to assume that the halftime show is a lucrative gig, it actually isn’t, as none of the performers get paid, at least not directly.
They all do it for free. Why? Well, it’s free exposure from the biggest yearly event in the United States, and that comes with plenty of perks, including new fans, social media followers, and further streaming on various platforms.
The opportunities are endless.

As to whether or not Kendrick Lamar did himself any justice is left to fans to debate, but he will probably not regret the outing.
