On Friday, Mark Maske of The Washington Post reported the NFL may seek a “significant” suspension of one full season for Watson.
Watson’s status for the 2022 regular season has been a major talking point for the past few months.
When the Cleveland Browns traded for Watson, they gave him a new contract that effectively protects him (and them) from losing any money to a suspension. As a result, even if Watson misses the full season, he’ll only lose $1 million in total earnings.
Earlier this week, ProFootballTalk reported that the NFLPA would be expected to mount an aggressive defense on Watson’s behalf.
The 26-year-old Watson was traded from the Texans to the Browns this past offseason and proceeded to sign a five-year, $230 million contract that was fully guaranteed. He has been sued by more than 20 Houston-area massage therapists for alleged sexual misconduct.

A recent New York Times bombshell revealed that Watson used “at least” 66 different female massage therapists in a 17-month stretch between 2019 and 2021.
Two Texas grand juries decided not to press criminal charges against Watson.
If Watson is suspended for the entire season, the Browns technically still have Baker Mayfield on their roster. But actually starting him at the quarterback position would be quite awkward, given all that’s happened this offseason.
