The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprise roster move ahead of their Week 7 road contest against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Steelers have cut special teams return man and wide receiver Gunner Olszewski. The 26-year-old and 2020 First-team All-Pro (as a member of the New England Patriots) was in his second season with the Steelers.
Olszewski appeared in two games for the Steelers this season. He saw one punt return for eight yards and returned two kicks for 24 yards. He saw one target in the passing game, and it was a reception that went for zero yards.
Olszewski had his best season with the Patriots in 2020. He led the NFL in punt return yards with 346 and even scored a touchdown. He finished the season with 849 all-purpose yards en route to his first All-Pro nod.
A year later, Olszewski had 309 punt return yards and 765 all-purpose yards. The Patriots interestingly decided not to bring back Olszewski after a successful three-year tenure, and the Steelers were happy to scoop him up.
But Olszewski was never able to get it going in the Steel City, and the Steelers didn’t want to wait around any longer for him to put it together. And so, Olszewski is back on the open market and should find a new home soon.
