When the Green Bay Packers signed former first-round pick Sammy Watkins in the offseason, they were hoping he’d be able to replace some of the production they lost when they dealt Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Fourteen weeks into the season, it looks like that experiment is done and the Packers are accepting their L.
Just hours ahead of their Monday Night Football showdown with the Los Angeles Rams, it is being reported that the Packers have cut ties with Watkins.
The move shouldn’t come as a huge shock to anyone who’s been paying attention, as Watkins has done next to nothing for Green Bay since arriving there. In nine games this season, Watkins has just 13 receptions for 206 yards and no touchdowns.
It’s just the latest development in what has been an up-and-down career for Watkins in the NFL. After being taken 4th overall in the 2014 draft, Watkins had a solid first two seasons in Buffalo, but his production fell off a cliff from there.
Over his next seven seasons, which he split between the Bills, Rams, Chiefs and Ravens, Watkins never even came close to surpassing the 700-yard mark. He did manage to win a Super Bowl with Kansas City in 2019, although he wasn’t exactly a key piece to their championship puzzle, racking up just 673 yards and three touchdowns that year.

The Packers signed him to just a one-year contract this offseason for $1.85-million, so it wasn’t the riskiest acquisition by Green Bay. It’ll be interesting to see which NFL franchise takes a shot on the oft-injured wide receiver next.
