Hiring one of the best defensive backs in NFL history has worked out well for Jackson State. Since bringing Deion Sanders on board as their head football coach, the Tigers went from a 4-8 team in 2019, to an 11-1 record and an SWAC Championship in 2021.
In what appears to have been an effort to replicate Jackson State’s success, NFL insider Jason La Canfora is reporting that Grambling State was trying to hire a Hall of Fame defensive back of their own. The report states that Grambling approached former Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed in hopes of bringing him on as their new head football coach.
La Canfora states that the offer was a very appealing one, and Reed strongly considered it. But in the end, he felt it just wasn’t the right time.
Reed is currently working as the chief of staff for the University of Miami’s football team, which is his alma mater. He felt as though his commitment to helping Miami get through this difficult time, as well as his family commitments, made this a less than ideal time to take the Grambling job.
Via CBS:
“[A]t the time of Grambling’s approach, Reed was helping his alma mater navigate a tricky situation with its football program, with Miami recently hiring a new coach and AD, and the timing was also not great for his family. So, Reed declined the offer.”
After striking out with Reed, the Grambling Tigers moved on to the more experienced Hue Jackson, who most recently coached the Cleveland Browns before being fired during the 2018 season.
