Another great week of football has passed. Other than the athletes who play the game, some head coaches were able to regroup and earn their first win of the season, whether it was through dominating fashion or come-from-behind victories.
Other NFL head coaches continued the charge to victory while some coaches saw their teams continue heading into the wrong trajectory. Even though it’s only been two weeks into the NFL season, there is still time to right the ship and turn things around. We’ll have to wait and see.
After week two, here are the grades for all 32 NFL teams’ head coaches.
Who are the top head coaches in the NFL after week two of play?
Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Gannon: A
Gannon’s Cardinals truly came to life as they crushed the Los Angeles Rams 41-10. Gannon’s team was on fire as first-round draft pick Marvin Harrison Jr. scored two touchdowns, igniting the flame for the Cardinals’ offense. Defensively, the Cardinals were relentless against the Rams, as they sacked Matthew Stafford five times and recovered a fumble. It was an excellent statement victory for Gannon’s squad as they focused their attention on facing the Detroit Lions in week three.
Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris: B+
Raheem Morris’ Falcons earned a statement 22-21 win against the Philadelphia Eagles as the game went down to the wire. Morris was very proud of Cousins throwing the game-winning touchdown to Drake London as well as Jessie Bates III intercepting Jalen Hurts’ pass to close the game out. Morris also said he wasn’t brought in to just beat the Eagles. He was brought in to put the Falcons in a position to potentially win championships. It’s only upward and onward from here.

Baltimore Ravens: John Harbaugh: B-
Despite the Ravens losing 23-26 to the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach John Harbaugh isn’t worried about his future in the NFL. Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, and Zay Flowers played a good game on offense. The Ravens’ defense had five sacks against Gardner Minshew in the game. Harbaugh said the team has to keep pounding the rock, and eventually, the reward will be on the other side of that rock. The Ravens will rebound, but we’ll just have to see how they’ll do against the Dallas Cowboys in week three.
Buffalo Bills: Sean McDermott: B+
McDermott’s Bills traveled to South Beach and earned a strong 31-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Aside from Josh Allen and James Cook playing a solid game on offense, McDermott’s defense played well with two sacks, three interceptions, and one pick-six. McDermott is a great defensive-minded NFL head coach, and it shows. His defense has played well so far this season, and he still has Josh Allen, who’s an excellent game-changer when it matters most.
Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales: F
Canales’ Panthers played a disastrous game, as they lost to the Los Angeles Chargers 3-26. Bryce Young’s awful performance led to had coach Canales benching him for the time being in their future NFl games favor of Andy Dalton. Despite the sloppiness exhibited throughout, Chubba Hubbard had a decent game, as the Panthers’ lone bright spot. However, the Panthers overall, never found their rhythm. Will Canales and Dalton right the ship and turn things around? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Chicago Bears: Matt Eberflus: D-
Eberflus’ Bears struggled offensively, as they were defeated by the Houston Texans 13-19. Even though Caleb Williams struggled in his NFL primetime debut, with two interceptions and getting sacked seven times, Eberflus remains confident in Williams and the offense even with their slow start to the 2024 season. Eberflus was proud of the Bears’ defense that stopped the Texans’ run game, even though he said there are things they need to clean up. The Bears still need to find their consistency as the season continues, especially since the Bears will square off against the Indianapolis Colts in week three.
Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Taylor: C-
Taylor’s Bengals had a painful afternoon, as they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 25-26. On top of dealing with Ja’Marr Chase’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Bengals also suffered some injuries to defensive linemen B.J. Hill and Sheldon Rankins, which will be a blow to the team defensively. Taylor felt optimistic about Tee Higgins, as he is recovering from a hamstring injury. The Bengals need to improve their running game if they want to be ready for their big Monday night matchup when the Washington Commanders come to town.

Cleveland Browns: Kevin Stefanski: C-
Stefanski and the Browns may have won a sloppy 18-13 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Deshaun Watson looked awful. Stefanski didn’t hold back on Watson’s less-than-acceptable performance. He certainly did not hide his feelings. The true MVP of the game goes to the Browns’ defense, which made things tough for Trevor Lawrence. At the end of the game, Stefanski told reporters the team had to get the job done even if it was not pretty.
Dallas Cowboys: Mike McCarthy: D
It was a brutal afternoon for Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys, as they were crushed by the New Orleans Saints 19-44. The Cowboys’ run game was completely shut down, and they were held to only 68 yards. The Cowboys’ defense had no answers on how to stop Alvin Kamara, who ran all over them. If the Cowboys continue dropping games like this in humiliating fashion, the temperature on McCarthy’s seat will warm up considerably. The Cowboys have high expectations for everyone, especially their NFL head coach.
Denver Broncos: Sean Payton: F
Payton’s Broncos were a mess, as they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 6-13. Bo Nix looked awful as he was sacked twice and threw two interceptions. Payton met with Nix the day after the game and said the team could not get out of their own way regarding penalties and interceptions. Payton also said Nix needs to develop confidence, as he has decent pocket protection. Payton’s Broncos need to improve quickly if they want to have any chance in the upcoming tough week three matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Detroit Lions: Dan Campbell: C+
Dan Campbell’s Lions had a brutal afternoon as they lost a very close 16-20 game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Campbell said to the press that he took the blame for the Lions’ end-of-half field goal attempt, which resulted in too many men on the field, costing the team three extra points at halftime. However, the Lions’ defense played a strong game, sacking Baker Mayfield five times and keeping the Bucs’ running game on ice. Campbell and the Lions will certainly bounce back from this loss and turn things around very quickly.
Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur: B
LaFleur’s Packers bounced back in front of their home fans in their 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The running game was strong, thanks to Josh Jacobs bulldozing through defenders despite losing a fumble in the second quarter. LeFleur said he was very proud of how Malik Willis performed throughout the game, despite a weird moment when center Josh Myers threw up on the football before a snap. LeFleur is a great offensive-minded NFL head coach who makes sure any quarterback under his command can get the win, no matter if it’s Jordan Love or, in this case, Malik Willis.
Houston Texans: DeMeco Ryans: B
DeMeco Ryans’ team earned a solid 19-13 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. Aside from C.J. Stroud playing a good game, the Texans’ defense played relentlessly, as they sacked Caleb Williams seven times and forced him to throw two interceptions. Ryans said the Bears’ defense played well as the Texans run game was shut down, for the most part. Ryans’ Texans have their sights set on facing the Minnesota Vikings in week three.
Indianapolis Colts: Shane Steichen: D+
Steichen’s Colts nearly came back to win against the Packers but fell flat as Richardson was intercepted at the end of the game, resulting in a 10-16 loss. Richardson struggled to throw three interceptions in the game, as well as seeing the weapons around him drop key passes that would’ve been game-changers. Defensively, the Colts lost DeForest Buckner to an ankle injury and Laiatu Latu to a hip injury, both of which are going to hurt the team moving forward. Steichen has a talented team, and they need to drastically shack it up and bounce back from this loss and fast.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Doug Pederson: D
Pederson’s Jaguars lost an ugly 13-18 game to the Cleveland Browns, which everyone wants to put behind them. Pederson was at a loss for words at his team’s performance. Trevor Lawrence told the press that he took the blame for the Jags’ awful performance. This loss makes Pederson look ineffective, as his coaching seat must be slowly getting warmer. However, Pederson also said the Jaguars aren’t hitting the panic button just yet. Will the Jaguars find a way to turn things around? Only time will tell.
Kansas City Chiefs: Andy Reid: B+
Reid’s Chiefs had a good afternoon in their nail-biting 26-25 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Patrick Mahomes played well, and kicker Harrison Butker saved the game with his game-winning kick. The Chiefs lost Isiah Pacheco to an injured fibula, and Reid doesn’t know when he’ll return. However, Reid, Mahomes, and the Chiefs know how to win games, and they will undoubtedly find a way to continue to win, even with Pacheco’s absence, come week three.
Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce: B+
Pierce and the Raiders stunned the football world with their 26-23 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Pierce called everyone out who picked the Raiders to lose by 10. Davante Adams had a strong performance with 110 receiving yards and a touchdown, as well as Maxx Crosby sacking Lamar Jackson twice and Jack Jones, breaking up a pass intended for Isaiah Likely, which would’ve given the Ravens a first down. The Raiders looked sharp, and they now have their sights set on week three.
Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh: A-
Harbaugh’s Chargers earned their second win of the season as they clobbered the Carolina Panthers 26-3. Harbaugh’s coaching helped Quentin Johnston up his game, as he scored two touchdowns. On defense, Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter made things miserable for Bryce Young, who struggled all game. Harbaugh has the Chargers moving in the right direction as they prepare for their week three matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Los Angeles Rams: Sean McVay: F
McVay’s Rams had a disastrous game, as they fell 10-41 to the Arizona Cardinals. Matthew Stafford struggled all game, including being sacked five times. It also didn’t help that Cooper Kupp left the game with an ankle injury. It also does not help that the Rams’ offensive line has been dealing with injuries of their own (Steve Avila, who is dealing with a medial collateral ligament sprain, and Joe Noteboom, who is dealing with an ankle sprain). The Rams are going to need to make sure the guys on their roster step up as Kupp, Puka Nacua, Avila, and Noteboom recover from their injuries.
Miami Dolphins: Mike McDaniel: C-
McDaniel’s Dolphins struggled on the field, on both sides of the ball, in their brutal 10-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Tua Tagovailoa suffered a horrifying concussion during the game, and McDaniel is a great example of compassionate leadership. McDaniel embraced Tua, making sure he was okay before he left for the locker room. It is always difficult for any NFL head coach when a player gets hurt on the field. Sometimes, a great coach can be a guy who truly cares about his athletes’ health and well-being.
Minnesota Vikings: Kevin O’Connell: A-
Minnesota Vikings: Kevin O’Connell: A-
O’Connell’s Vikings won a close 23-17 game against the San Francisco 49ers and had some excellent moments where the team brought the hammer down. Justin Jefferson scored a 97-yard touchdown, and Sam Darnold officially earned O’Connell’s trust as he helped revive his career as a signal caller. On defense, defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ unit sacked Brock Purdy six times and is ready to compete against other top offenses moving forward. Don’t sleep on the Vikings.
New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo: C+
Jerod Mayo and the Patriots played a close yet competitive game against the Seattle Seahawks despite losing 20-23 in overtime. Brissett and the running game played well, but the passing attack was lackluster as offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt needs to come up with better schemes in the team’s next game and move forward. On defense, Mayo’s team had three sacks yet no defensive turnovers. This Patriots’ team is still young and has the potential to wreak havoc against very talented teams as the season continues.
New Orleans Saints: Dennis Allen: A-
Allen’s job may be safe, for now, as the Saints crushed the Dallas Cowboys 44-19. Aside from a terrific offensive performance from Derek Carr, Alvin Kamara, and Rashid Shaheed, the defense head coached by Allen and NFL defensive coordinator Joe Woods silenced the Cowboys’ rushing attack, sacked Dak Prescott three times, and forced him to throw two costly interceptions. If Allen and the Saints continue to earn solid wins, the Saints will for sure make the playoffs. However, a few of the Saints’ upcoming opponents are very serious contenders, like the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, down the road.
New York Giants: Brian Daboll: D
Daboll simply did not coach a very good game, with the Giants losing 18-21 to the Washington Commanders. Yes, Daniel Jones, Devin Singletary, and Malik Nabers all had good games, but the Giants lost Graham Gano to a hamstring injury, and they don’t have a healthy kicker on the roster. If Daboll and the Giants continue to find new ways to lose games in humiliating fashion instead of winning them, the Giants owner, John Mara, might just want to raise the temperature of Daboll’s seat very soon.
New York Jets: Robert Saleh: B-
Saleh and the Jets bounced back from week one, as they returned to the open road and defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17. Offensively, Saleh’s guys started scoring in the second quarter and never looked back, thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ leadership on the field, despite being somewhat inconsistent. On defense, the Jets had four sacks, and Saleh said the defensive line is the heartbeat of the team. If the Jets continue improving under Saleh’s leadership and Aaron Rodgers remains healthy, the Jets can potentially return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season.
Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Sirianni: C+
Even though the Eagles played a tough game, they lost in the final seconds 21-22 to the Atlanta Falcons. Nick Sirianni has gotten a lot of blame for the Eagles’ fourth-quarter collapse. In four of the last seven losses of the 2023 season, the Eagles led with two minutes left on the clock. This painful loss puts the Eagles’ fans on edge. Sirianni’s team had some good moments in the game from Jalen Hurts, who scored a rushing touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith, and Saquon Barkley rushed for 95 yards but dropped a small pass from Hurts.
This resulted in Sirianni wanting to kick a field goal when he could’ve gone for it on fourth down. Choices matter. Hopefully, Sirianni and the Eagles will return to the win column and cook up a new recipe for success come week three when they face the New Orleans Saints.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin: C+
Even though the Steelers defeated the Denver Broncos 13-6, they must clean a few things up. Tomlin told the press after the game that the Steelers have to avoid making penalties. They had nine accepted penalties, which cost them 78 yards and negated a George Pickens touchdown. Tomlin’s defense played hard, as they sacked Bo Nix twice and forced him to throw two interceptions. Tomlin needs the Steelers to play a cleaner game come week three when the Los Angeles Chargers come to town.
San Francisco 49ers: Kyle Shanahan: C-
It was a brutal afternoon for the 49ers, as they were defeated by the Minnesota Vikings 17-23. Shannahan’s offense did score two touchdowns thanks to George Kittle and Jordan Mason, but the offensive line allowed six sacks on Brock Purdy. On defense, the 49ers had some shining moments from Fred Warner but couldn’t stop Justin Jefferson or Ty Chandler as they turned in great performances. Shannahan and the 9ers need to rebound, fast, even though there’s still plenty of football to go before the season concludes in January.
Seattle Seahawks: Mike MacDonald: B-
Former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator turned Seahawks’ head coach Mike MacDonald continues to shine, as his NFL team is 2-0 after defeating the New England Patriots 23-20 in overtime. Geno Smith played well, and DK Metcalf had a strong game, but the Seahawks rushing attack truly missed Kenneth Walker III, as he was inactive. On defense, the Seahawks had three sacks but no defensive turnovers. MacDonald has shown himself to be a good coach who needs his team to get more turnovers like they did in week one. We’ll just wait and see what else this young Seahawks team can do in the weeks ahead.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Todd Bowles: C+
Todd Bowles’ Bucs may have won a 20-16 competitive game against the Detroit Lions, but some things could’ve gone better. The Bucs’ running game was put on ice thanks to Aidan Hutchinson, who Bowles admitted in his postgame press conference “made our life miserable.” Hutchinson had 4.5 sacks against Baker Mayfield in the game. Bowles also said the Bucs’ have a lot of fight in them and have to move on to preparing for the Denver Broncos in week three.
Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan: D+
It was another rough week for Callahan, as the Titans dropped their home opener 17-24 against the New York Jets. Callahan wasn’t happy, despite some decent play from Will Levis and strong performances from both Calvin Ridley and Tony Pollard. Levis struggled, and when he fumbled the ball away to the Jets, Callahan didn’t hide his frustrations. He said to the press that it was similar to what he (Lewis) did last week when he threw an interception that was returned for a pick-six to the Chicago Bears. If the Titans continue to drop games, with close scores for the remainder of the season, ownership should consider replacing Callahan with someone else.
Washington Commanders: Dan Quinn: C-
Dan Quinn’s team played a somewhat aggressive game, as they defeated the New York Giants 21-18 without scoring a touchdown. Despite a decent afternoon from Jayden Daniels and Brian Robinson Jr., the Commanders’ defense only had one sack and fumble recovery. They couldn’t stop Malik Nabers or Devin Singletary. Quinn told the press he plans to make sure the Commanders avoid having too many false start penalties as he and the team set their attention toward their week three matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
