With week five in the books, some quarterbacks have played well, others improved, and some managed to take a massive step back and fell apart very quickly. There’s still time to turn things around for some signal callers, but it may be too little too late for other signal callers.
Here is where all 32 NFL Teams quarterbacks look after week 5 games:
Arizona Cardinals – Joshua Dobbs: D+
Joshua Dobbs has played a lot better than expected as he fills in for Kyler Murray who is recovering from his ACL surgery. Dobbs had an average week five performance where he threw two touchdowns and two costly interceptions (one of those interceptions was a pick-six). Dobbs is a good quarterback who has shown flashes of successful play and will rebound, but will he secure more wins for the Cardinals? Only time will tell as the season continues.
Atlanta Falcons – Desmond Ridder: B-
Second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder was one of those quarterbacks with question marks on his back about his play and so far, he’s been a so-and-so quarterback. His performance rebounded against the Texans after getting knocked around by the Jacksonville Jaguars in week four. Ridder scored a rushing touchdown, threw a receiving touchdown to Bijan Robinson, threw no interceptions, and was not sacked by the Texans’ defense. Ridder has shown he can be a good signal caller on certain days. He most likely will slowly improve and stay the Falcon’s main starter for a good few years to come.
Baltimore Ravens – Lamar Jackson: C-

Lamar Jackson wasn’t able to score a touchdown and threw one interception in the Ravens 17-10 defeat to the Steelers defense. However, he did complete 22 passes for 236 yards and was sacked four times in the game. A lot of why Jackson didn’t have his best game was due to TJ Watt and the Steeler’s defense which continues to play at an elite level which is one of the reasons why the Ravens vs Steelers rivalry is always incredible to watch. Jackson will need to rebound in a huge way as the Ravens continue their road trip into week six for a primetime matchup across the pond in London against the struggling Tennessee Titans.
Buffalo Bills – Josh Allen: B-
Even though the Bills tried to comeback from behind and win against the Jaguars in London, Josh Allen still played fairly well with 27 completions for 359 yards, threw two touchdowns and one interception, and was not sacked in the contest. Allen is still a great quarterback who will always have the on-field production to keep the Bills in it no matter what the result is in the end. Allen’s play is still good, but the Bills need to step up on offense if they want to win the AFC East this year with the Miami Dolphins rising as competition for the division crown.
Carolina Panthers – Bryce Young: D-
Bryce Young is a talented quarterback, but the Panthers doesn’t have enough support he truly needs in order to succeed. Young was able to complete 25 passes for 247 yards, throw three touchdowns and two interceptions, and was sacked one time. Although the Panthers struggles aren’t really his fault, Young is doing the best he can with too many aged veteran offensive weapons on the roster as opposed to getting him young talent to work with. The Panthers may need to take a page out of the Cincinnati Bengals book and draft a young flashy wide receiver like Marvin Harrison Jr. if he’s available in the 2024 draft similar to how the Bengals took Ja’Marr Chase in the 2021 draft a couple years ago. Then we may see some improvements in Carolina.
Cincinnati Bengals – Joe Burrow: B-
Joe Burrow had a massive rebound in the Bengals week five victory over the Cardinals with Burrow throwing three touchdowns against one interception. This is the Joe Burrow the NFL has gotten to know from his Super Bowl runner-up season who is out for blood and wants to get his team back to the Super Bowl and get that championship he rightfully deserves.
Chicago Bears – Justin Fields: B
Justin Fields has been playing well this season despite the Bears dropping their first four games of the season in embarrassing fashion. Fields helped the Bears rebound in their week five upset victory with 15 completions for 282 yards, threw four touchdowns, threw no interceptions, and rushed for 57 yards on 11 attempts. Fields is a good quarterback, but doesn’t usually have the talent around him. However, with D.J. Moore balling out for the Panthers in the victory, Fields may be able to secure more victories for the Bears as the season progresses forward. Will Fields help the Bears make the playoffs? No, but he can help the team get more upset wins on the season as the team tries to improve in 2024.
Cleveland Browns: Bye Week
The Browns need Deshon Watson to return from injury and have Dorian Thompson-Robinson on standby just in case Watson doesn’t play in week six and onwards.
Dallas Cowboys – Dak Prescott: F
Dak Prescott did not have a great game. He completed 14 passes for 153 yards, threw one touchdown and three interceptions, and was sacked three times before getting benched and replaced with backup Cooper Rush who completed two passes for eight yards and was sacked once in the game. This was a very bad game for Prescott, and it shows that teams with elite defenses can easily dominate the Cowboys even though they started the season 2-0. Prescott’s play needs to get better in order to stay afloat in the NFC East in order to try and make a push for the playoffs, but there’s a lot of time left for Prescott to put this loss behind him and improve for the remainder of the season.
Denver Broncos – Russell Wilson: C-
Russell Wilson didn’t play badly; he’s just stuck on a horrendous Broncos team that is in complete disarray. Wilson completed 20 passes for 196 yards, threw two touchdowns, no interceptions, and was sacked four times. Wilson is talented and can lead teams to victory like we saw when he was a Seattle Seahawk, but it’s been a disaster for the team around Wilson in order for him to make the Broncos successful. If Wilson can’t make the Broncos successful, it’ll be time to start over from scratch in 2024.
Detroit Lions – Jared Goff: A
Ever since Jared Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions in 2021 for Matt Stafford, it has been a massive success for both the Lions and the Rams. Goff is continuing to improve each season in the Motor City and his performance in week five shows that. Goff completed 20 passes for 236 yards and threw three touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown in the Lions statement victory over the Carolina Panthers. Goff is giving a Lions fanbase a great amount of hope and momentum which will help them potentially win the NFC North and possibly the team’s first playoff game since the 1991 season. It’s only upward for Goff from here!
Green Bay Packers- Jordan Love: F
Jordan Love played his worst game of the season thus far by completing 16 passes for 182 yards, threw no touchdowns and three interceptions on the night. Despite Love’s poor performance, he still can play and can be the leader of the Packers moving forward. It’s a question of whether Love will bounce back or not. It seems more likely than not Love will bounce back from that and possibly help the Packers secure a surprise playoff spot if he moves forward from this week five loss.
Houston Texans – C.J. Stroud: B-
C.J. Stroud and the Texans may have lost a 19-21 nail-biter of a game to the Atlanta Falcons, but Stroud played well in their loss by throwing a touchdown to Dalton Schultz and wasn’t sacked. Stroud is quickly becoming the face of the rebuilding Houston Texans and will help the team win the AFC South in a year or two if he continues to play well and improve his craft on the field.
Indianapolis Colts – Anthony Richardson/Gardner Minshew: B-
It was a painful day for Anthony Richardson as he left the game with an AC Join sprain and can miss some serious time. Richardson completed nine passes for 98 yards and was sacked once on the day. Luckily the Colts have backup Gardner Minshew who filled in quite Nicely for Richardson by completing 11 passes for 155 yards, didn’t throw any touchdowns or interceptions all game, and was not sacked at all. Minshew is a great backup quarterback for emergency situations like this similar to how Nick Foles was when he filled in for an injured Carson Wentz in 2017. Minshew has led the Colts to a surprise victory over the Baltimore Ravens on the road and must be prepared for action for the rest of the season depending on how long Richardson is out for.
Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevor Lawrence: B-
Trevor Lawrence had a great game across the pond for a second straight week as the Jaguars defeated the Bills despite a comeback attempt by Buffalo in the second half. Lawrence completed 25 passes for 315 yards, threw one touchdown and threw zero interceptions. Lawrence was sacked five times in the game, but the win makes up for it. Lawrence isn’t elite, but he is a great leader for a championship hungry Jaguars team looking to make it back to the AFC Championship game in the future.
Kansas City Chiefs – Patrick Mahomes: B+
Patrick Mahomes rebounded from his week four performance to a performance that saw him complete 31 passes for 281 yards and threw two touchdown passes. Mahomes is still considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league despite his performance in week four’s victory against the New York Jets. Mahomes is the leader of the Chiefs offense that has the potential to go back to the Super Bowl and repeat as champions for the first time since the 2004 New England Patriots depending on how the Chiefs finish the 2023 season.
What changes would you make to our quarterback rankings?
Las Vegas Raiders – Jimmy Garoppolo: B
Jimmy Garoppolo looked like a glimmer of the quarterback we saw during his time with the San Francisco 49ers by completing 22 passes for 208 yards, threw a touchdown and one interception on the night. If Garoppolo continues to play like he did in week five and improve on this, the Raiders do have a possible shot at a surprise playoff appearance in the Wildcard round. It all depends on how Jimmy G plays and improves on as the season continues.
Los Angeles Chargers- Justin Herbert: Bye week
If Justin Herbert continues to play well and help the Chargers get wins, Herbert and his team can potentially make a playoff push.
Los Angeles Rams – Matthew Stafford: B-
Despite the Los Angeles Rams dropping a tough week five 23-14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Matthew Stafford played well with 21 completions for 222 yards, threw two touchdowns and was sacked four times in the loss. Stafford is looking like he can help the Rams return to the playoffs since their Super Bowl 56 run and has the talent around him to make this season a successful one. If the Rams turn things around after this loss and win more crucial games this season, than Stafford can potentially lead the Rams on a playoff run.
Miami Dolphins – Tua Tagovailoa: B-
Tua Tagovailoa looked good as he completed 22 of 30 passes for 308 yards, threw two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tagovailoa continues to impress after his injury filled 2022 season as he can potentially lead the Miami Dolphins to a surprise AFC East crown over the Buffalo Bills depending on how both franchises finish the 2023 season. Tagovailoa can only go upwards from here.
Minnesota Vikings – Kirk Cousins: C
Kirk Cousins is a descent quarterback who is stuck on a Minnesota Vikings team that continues to shoot themselves in the foot in close games. Cousins completed 29 passes for 284 yards and threw two touchdowns in the Vikings week five 20-27 loss to the Chiefs. Cousins can play, but it’s been a disappointing season for the Vikings when it matters most. Cousins will lead Minnesota to a few more wins this season, but don’t expect the veteran signal caller to head back to the playoffs and to possibly find a new home after this season.
New England Patriots – Mac Jones: F
Mac Jones looked awful in the Patriots week five 34-0 shutout loss to the New Orleans Saints. He completed 12 passes for 110 yards and threw two interceptions before getting benched once again for Bailey Zappe. Zappe completed three passes for 22 yards when he on the field. Ever since Tom Brady left the Patriots for the Buccaneers in 2020, the Patriots have lost their way in the AFC East and need to have a massive overhaul of the team and start from scratch if they want to be competitive again!
New Orleans Saints – Derek Carr: A-
Derek Carr looked good as he completed 18 passe for 186 yards, threw two touchdowns, no interceptions and was sacked twice in the Saints 34-0 victory over New England. Carr can definitely lead the Saints to an NFC South crown and/or a playoff appearance and possibly win and make a small run towards the Divisional round depending on how everything in the Big Easy goes this season. The Saints at this point are a sleeper team with Carr driving the Saints to victory!
New York Giants – Daniel Jones: F
Daniel Jones did not throw any touchdowns in the week five loss, was sacked six times and left the game with a neck injury and was replaced by Tyrod Taylor who was sacked once in the 16-31 loss. Jones can play and can be a leader, but the offensive line continues to be the Giants kryptonite hurting Jones’ performance all season long. If the Giants miss the playoffs which is very likely, the Giants need to start investing a lot more in their offensive line in order to be successful in 2024.
New York Jets – Zach Wilson: D+
Zach Wilson didn’t play that much better than Wilson. He completed 19 passes for 199 yards, threw no touchdowns, and was sacked four times. Wilson is trying to be the replacement leader with Aaron Rodgers recovering from his Achillies surgery so he can return to the lineup next year. Wilson can play well as we saw in week four, but needs to play much better if the Jets want to stay relevant in the AFC East, otherwise if the Jets keep losing games with Wilson at the helm, they can land a better playmaker/successor plan in case Rodgers retires in the future.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Kenny Pickett: C
Kenny Pickett did not play his best game of the season, but unlike his offensive opponent Lamar Jackson, Pickett did not throw any interceptions and threw one touchdown pass in the Steelers’ 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Pickett’s play helped but this game was more of a defensive battle between the two rivals. It does show that Pickett is the leader of the Steeler’s offense and will be their quarterback moving forward in their next opposing battles for years to come.
Philadelphia Eagles – Jalen Hurts: B-
Jalen Hurts is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league even though in this week five victory, he threw one interception despite completing 25 passes for 303 yards and threw a touchdown. Hurts also rushed for 72 yards and scored a rushing touchdown on 15 carries. Hurts and the Eagles have the talent to return to the Super Bowl and possibly avenge their Super Bowl 57 loss with a win if they continue to play great to elite. However, anything can happen throughout the regular season which can change things in a blink of an eye.
San Francisco 49ers – Brock Purdy: A
Brock Purdy is quickly going from Mr. Irrelevant to becoming a potential champion in the Bay Area. He completed 17 passes for 252 yards, threw four touchdowns, no interceptions, and was only sacked once. Purdy is the guy for the 49ers for years to come and with the help of Kyle Shanahan, Purdy will eventually lead the 49ers to a potential Super Bowl victory much sooner than a lot of people realize. It’s upwards and onwards for Purdy with the season continuing onwards.
Seattle Seahawks – Geno Smith: Bye week
Geno Smith needs to continue to play well in order to have another successful season like he had in 2022.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Baker Mayfield: Bye week
Baker Mayfield and the Bucs need to continue to play well like they are doing so far this season if they want to claim the NFC South crown.
Tennessee Titans – Ryan Tannehill: D
Ryan Tannehill is nowhere near his 2019 Comeback Player of the Year season. He completed 23 passes for 264 yards, threw no touchdowns and one interception, and was sacked once. If Tannehill continues to struggle, it may be time for the Titans to bench him and move towards focusing on building around rookie Will Levis for the future if the Titans want to stay relevant in the AFC South.
Washington Commanders – Sam Howell: C-
Sam Howell actually played fairly well by completing 37 passes for 388 yards, threw two touchdowns, and one interception in the 40-20 week five loss to the Chicago Bears. Despite how the team played, Howell looks to be the leader of the Commanders offense if they earn more wins throughout the season. If the Commanders lose more games in heartbreaking and humiliating fashion, don’t be surprised if Howell is benched and the Commanders find someone else in the future.
