Google has become the subject of a lawsuit after having purchased the rights for NFL Sunday Ticket, which is moving to YouTube following a lengthy stay on DirecTV.
According to Reuters, the company has seen a lawsuit filed against it as a U.S. federal court is looking into the deal. By the looks of things, the proceedings began while the service was still with DirecTV.
“Google has been hit with a lawsuit in US federal court seeking information about its multibillion-dollar deal with the National Football League to exclusively hold the broadcast rights for the ‘Sunday Ticket’ package of televised professional games,” the publication reports.
It’s understood that residential and business subscribers “asked a judge to compel Google to respond to a demand for information in the plaintiffs’ case against the NFL and DirecTV.”
This results from the NFL, teams, and DirecTV all being taken to task and does not involve Google. However, the complainants are looking for the latter to disclose specifics that may or may not help their case.
Reuters reports that they are seeking $6 billion in damages as they assert that the league, its teams, and DirecTV all colluded to limit the availability of televised games in order to bring up the price of Sunday Ticket.
The information being sought includes, “retail pricing, rights fees, and subscriber numbers. The attorneys said they want to learn more about any ‘influence’ the NFL has placed on Google.”
