Saquon Barkley has committed to training camp with the New York Giants following the agreement of a one-year deal, with reports revealing the running back will earn $11 million next season.
This brings an end to a long-drawn-out saga between the parties that could have resulted in Barkley sitting out the entire 2023 campaign.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk has since reported that the Giants actually tried trading the star RB after using the franchise tag on him earlier in the offseason.
Florio’s report claims the trade attempts came about at the request of the player’s representatives after they failed to agree on a long-term deal.
The Giants were said to be keen on tagging quarterback Daniel Jones and signing Barkley to a multiple-year extension. But they ended up extending Jones and tagging Barkley instead after negotiations fell through.

Florio has cited multiple sources who claim that the Giants called “a dozen teams” in an attempt to find a trade partner around March/April. Clearly, the search yielded no results.
The Giants will be able to tag the RB again in 2024 as his new deal does not include a “no franchise tag” clause. But at least they have a year to play with.
