The New York Giants don’t seem to really have a plan in place, and they showed as much when they sent their fan base and draft experts into a frenzy when they took Duke QB Daniel Jones with the 6th overall draft pick in the 2019 draft.
It was looked at as the viable replacement for Eli Manning for when he finally hangs it up or gets sent packing to another franchise, but as it turns out, Jones might not see the field for sometime.
General Manager Dave Gettleman, who is widely disliked among the fan base, suggested that the team just might follow what Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers and sit Jones for up to three years.
“Maybe we’re going to be the Green Bay model, where Rodgers sat for three years. Who knows?” Gettleman said, via Ryan Dunleavy of NJ Advance Media. “You can never have too many good players at one position.”
Green Bay didn’t catch backlash for their decision due to the fact that the franchise hadn’t had a losing season in 14 years when they drafted Rodgers 24th overall in 2005.
“We drafted a quarterback that we believe is a franchise quarterback,” Gettleman said of Jones. “That’s really the long and the short of it.”
Asked if the plan for Manning was one more season, Gettleman said, “Absolutely not.”
