The Kansas City Chiefs probably completed one of the best touchdowns that didn’t count on Sunday during the team’s game against the Buffalo Bills.
With less than two minutes to play, a completed pass to Travis Kelce had him throwing the ball backward to wide receiver Kadarius Toney who then streaked into the end zone in what every NFL fan at Arrowhead Stadium and at home thought was the go-ahead touchdown.
Both Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes complained about the penalty.
“It’s the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I’ve never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn’t a warning the entire game. And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we’re talking about the refs. It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football,” Mahomes said.
Former NFL referee turned officiating expert Gene Steratore weighed in and sent a stern message to both Mahomes and Reid.
“When officiating the line of scrimmage, general philosophy is not to be overly technical and split hairs over very minor infractions (such as a receiver’s hand slightly breaking the LOS),” he explained.
“However, when an infraction is so egregious and obvious, a flag has to be thrown. Kadarius Toney is blatantly lined up offside and in the neutral zone. You rarely see an offsides penalty on the offense, but that is not because this play in #BUFvsKC isn’t a foul.”

A penalty was called on Toney because he appeared to line up in the neutral zone. It cost the team the Chiefs the game, but it was the right call.
Mahomes finished the game 25 of 43 with 271 passing yards and a touchdown pass. Toney had three catches on four targets for 25 yards. Kelce led the team with six catches for 83 yards.
Kansas City fell to 8-5 on the year. Buffalo improved to 7-6.
