On Monday, Frank Reich became the second NFL head coach to get fired this season.
Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper announced in a statement that Reich had been relieved of his duties as head coach. The Panthers’ 17-10 road loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday dropped them to a league-worst 1-10 on the year.
During an interview with Scott Fowler of The Charlotte Observer, Reich revealed that his short-lived tenure with the Panthers also likely marked the last chapter of his NFL coaching career.
The Charlotte Observer
It was a great opportunity. The way the doors opened up for it was amazing. But there’s not always a storybook ending…. I also take comfort and find peace and strength that there is a next chapter of my life. I do believe that. I do believe God ordains our steps…This is probably the final chapter of my NFL journey.”
Reich was an NFL quarterback from 1985 to 1998, playing for the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Detroit Lions. Reich’s NFL coaching career began with the Colts in 2006, where he served as an intern under Tony Dungy.
Indianapolis won a Super Bowl 41 championship in Reich’s first year as an intern, and he was eventually promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2008.

Reich was later the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator (2014 to 2015) before joining Doug Pederson’s staff in Philadelphia as the OC in 2016. In year two there, Reich did wonders with backup QB Nick Foles and led the Eagles to the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship.
Reich’s success in Philly landed him his first NFL head coaching job with the Colts in 2018. He was let go in the midst of the 2022 season after going 3-5-1 through nine games.
