Weeks after the announcement of the USFL-XFL merger, a critical update has emerged about the teams that will continue to operate.
Pro Football Talk reports that the USFL Players Association has informed its members that four USFL teams are set to continue in the merged league for the 2024 season.
Linebacker Scooby Wright III shared a text message that stated the teams are the Michigan Panthers, Houston Gamblers, Memphis Showboats, and Birmingham Stallions.
On the XFL side, the Pittsburgh Maulers, New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, and Philadelphia Stars will still stay in operation.
With the upcoming finalization of the merger between the USFL and XFL, it meant there would be two teams in Houston, the USFL’s Gamblers and the XFL’s Roughnecks. It seems logical that only one team would survive the merger.
The Roughnecks may have been more beloved in the city since they actually played there, but the Gamblers have history on their side. Just a few days ago, the Roughnecks announced the release of several key players from their 2023 XFL season. Many of the players released, such as Charles Wiley, Derick Robertson, and Raleigh Texada, were integral parts of one of the best defenses in the 2023 XFL.
