The Cleveland Browns have some tough decisions to make this offseason.
Having come off an impressive season in which they made the playoffs after bringing Joe Flacco in as their quarterback, they will look to go even further in 2024 as they hope Deshaun Watson will be able to give them a full season.
Watson was hardly the only player who needed to be replaced as the Browns endured multiple injuries over the course of the campaign, with star running back Nick Chubb suffering a gruesome knee injury in Week 2 that ruled him out for the rest of the season.
While the four-time Pro Bowler is expected to make a full recovery, The Athletic has named him as a potential cap casualty, suggesting he could be cut.
“The Browns want to keep Chubb and hope he can be an effective fourth-quarter closer for them in the back half of next season. But Chubb is recovering from two surgeries on his injured knee, and he’s due to carry a salary cap charge of just under $16 million in 2024, the final year of his contract and his age-28 season,” the publication writes.
Chubb is widely considered to be the best runner in the NFL and it would be difficult to sever ties with him, but the business side of the game hardly takes such into consideration. Fortunately for the Browns, they don’t have to rush to a decision and can monitor the RB’s progress before doing so.
