Greg Olsen has some very telling comments as to why Russell Wilson is no longer in Seattle.
During an appearance on The Colin Cowherd Podcast, the former Seahawks tight end gave his thoughts on the mega trade that sent Wilson to the Denver Broncos. When asked what went wrong in Seattle, Olsen made an interesting comment about the Seahawks’ coaching staff.
“I never thought they had a personnel issue,” Olsen told Cowherd. “The conversations I would have with the coaches and the amount of pushback and the amount of questions I would get in return, saying ‘I’m not sure if we could do this. I’m not sure if we could protect this.’ I’d sit there scratching my head. It was like we were playing with a JV roster. It was like we were playing with a rookie undrafted quarterback. It was very interesting to me.
“The ideology there was always defense first, kicking game, punt the ball, field position, forced turnovers, and then hand the ball over to Russ at the end of the game and say, ‘Go be magic.’ I just think it was part of Russell’s frustration. I think it’s why he said, ‘I want to go somewhere where this is going to be an offensive, quarterback-driven team every Sunday with the ball in my hand, like Aaron Rodgers.’”
On Tuesday, the Broncos reshaped the AFC West landscape, agreeing to a massive trade with the Seahawks for Russell Wilson. Denver sent Seattle DE Shelby Harris, QB Drew Lock, and TE Noah Fant, along with two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and one fifth-round pick to acquire the nine-time Pro Bowler.
Wilson will play out the third season of the four-year, $140 million contract he signed in April 2019.
Last season, the Seahawks struggled with a 7-10 record as Wilson threw for 3,113 yards and 25 touchdowns.
