Former NFL wide receiver Charles Johnson tragically lost his life back in July of 2022 and we are now finding out how it happened. The former Super Bowl champ died by suicide after overdosing on drugs, according to a report released by the North Carolina state medical examiner’s office Monday, per Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today.
The 50-year-old was found dead in a hotel room in Raleigh after his wife had reported him missing. Officers responded to a welfare check after Johnson had not checked out of the room and found him unresponsive on the bed.
An autopsy revealed he had oxycodone, hydrocodone and mirtazapine in his system at the time of his death, though he had no active prescriptions.
“In the previous week, he had been acting strange and had recently purchased a funeral and cremation service,” the report obtained by USA Today stated.
Johnson was a standout player at Colorado which was good enough to get him selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Johnson got his start in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was the 17th overall pick in the 1997 draft. In 2001, Johnson was a member of the 2001 New England Patriots team that won Super Bowl XXXVI.
