Episode 9 of The Last Dance gave us a behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jordan’s apparent flu game, but what we actually got was the truth.
Before Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz — Jordan ate an entire pizza by himself and felt like total crap afterwards. He still scored 38 points and the Bulls went up 3-2.
Since then, other athletes have tried to imitate Jordan’s toughness by playing through health problems of their own.
That led to former NFL wide receiver Andrew Hawkins telling the world about his flu game.
As a member of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012, Hawkins ended up feeling very bad on the same day of their Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, but he wanted to tough it out and have a breakout postseason game that would be remembered forever.
Instead, he had two catches for 15 yards in a 19-13 loss to the Texans.
