The Arizona Cardinals have added another young offensive weapon to help Kyler Murray and the offense for the second-half stretch.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cardinals claimed ex-New York Jets RB Michael Carter from the waivers. In a surprise move, the third-year running back was waived by the club two days after their Week 10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Arizona’s lead RB, James Conner, missed four games with a knee injury before returning in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons. Conner and Murray (making his season debut) led the Cardinals to a thrilling 25-23 home win to end a six-game losing skid.
Conner will undoubtedly remain Arizona’s RB1 going forward, but it doesn’t hurt to have extra depth, and Carter showed glimpses in his 2021 rookie year. As a rookie for the Jets, Carter had 639 rushing yards, four rushing scores and 964 total yards of offense.
Since Murray’s arrival in 2019, the Cardinals have featured a rush-heavy offense. With Murray 11 months removed from a torn ACL, Arizona will obviously want to limit how much he runs the ball going forward.
So they can get by with a promising running back duo of Conner and Carter, who should do wonders together playing alongside a standout dual-threat QB.
