A former New York Giants star and fan favorite believes it’s time for a change at the game’s most important position.
Ex-Giants wideout Victor Cruz, a key part of the Giants’ Super Bowl 46 champion team, has called for New York to replace quarterback Daniel Jones. The 26-year-old, who signed a four-year extension worth $160 million in the offseason, suffered a torn ACL that ended his season on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Appearing on Craig Carton’s “The Carton Show” (h/t Michael Obermuller of Heavy.com), Cruz stated that the Giants need to move on from the 2019 first-round pick and find a new quarterback in the offseason.
“In my opinion, I think we’ve got to go get a new quarterback. I think we’ve got to go and do the entire rebuild, re-franchise. It’s something just isn’t sitting right with this team…I think (head coach Brian) Daboll stays. I don’t think Daboll is the problem.”
Indeed, it’s unlikely that Daboll will go anywhere after winning Coach of the Year honors in his first season on the job. If New York were to fire Daboll, they’d enter 2024 with their fourth head coach in six years. Stability matters.
But Jones has only put together one decent season (2022) over his five-year career. And with the Giants in good position to select one of the many top quarterback prospects in next year’s draft, nobody should be surprised if the front office ultimately decides to move on from Jones.
