The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t 24 hours removed from their disheartening loss at Super Bowl 57, but they’ve already got something else on their plate as former safety and special teams member Chris Maragos has been awarded $43.5 million after suing the team for medical negligence, according to Sports Illustrated’s Ed Kracz.
Maragos was at a hearing which took place at the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court this Monday when three former teammates – including Nick Foles, Jordan Hicks, and Trey Burton – testified on his behalf.
The retired player was a key part of the Eagles’ coverage units between 2014 and 2017. He earned two contracts with Philly in his first three seasons but suffered a PCL tear in a game against the Carolina Panthers in October 2017. He was released by the Eagles in 2019 and was forced to retire thereafter.
In a suit filed this year, he accused the doctors in charge of his surgery and recovery of neglect, claiming they ignored a meniscus issue he also had at the time and exacerbated the situation by permitting running exercises before time.
The suit was specifically against renowned NFL-partnered orthopedic surgeon Dr. James P. Bradley, who also works with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has operated on the likes of Carson Wentz and Ben Roethlisberger.
