Former Dallas Cowboys star Leighton Vander Esch’s father is in some serious trouble.
According to a report from TMZ, the father of the retired NFL linebacker was arrested over the weekend on a multitude of disturbing charges.
Darwin Vander Esch was taken into police custody after they received a call regarding a domestic battery incident near the city of Riggins on December 1st.
The 61-year-old father of Leighton Vander Esch was arrested for felony attempted strangulation and cited for misdemeanor domestic battery and misdemeanor intentional destruction of a telecommunication device.

Vander Esch retired earlier this year following six NFL seasons, with the linebacker stepping away after missing 12 games for the Dallas Cowboys last year because of the latest in a series of neck injuries. His announcement came days after the Cowboys released him with a failed physical designation.
Leighton Vander Esch’s injury in 2023 was the fourth since 2019 involving the neck and was considered career-threatening.
After being the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Vander Esch started 65 of the 71 games for the Dallas Cowboys. His career started off with a bang as he set a club rookie record with 176 tackles and was a Pro Bowl pick in his first season.
He would finish his career with 557 career tackles, with 3.5 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and three interceptions.
