Lamar Jackson, the former MVP and overall dynamic QB has been tagged. The Ravens on Tuesday used the franchise tag on Lamar Jackson, securing the star quarterback for the 2023 NFL season. Or did they?
The team has opted for the non-exclusive tender which opens the door for other teams to pursue the former MVP. Five of the teams around the league made it really clear about their stance, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
“Teams that reportedly will not be pursuing a deal for Lamar Jackson include: Falcons, Dolphins, Panthers, Commanders, Raiders.”
Despite many of those teams needing an upgrade at quarterback, they decided to make it public that they won’t pursue a former MVP QB.
Should Jackson agree to an outside offer, Baltimore will have the opportunity to match the said offer or allow the QB to sign elsewhere and receive two first-round draft picks in return. Right now, it seems like teams around the league are trying to send a message that fully guaranteed deals like the one Jackson wants, won’t be a thing of the future. Also, not many teams likely want to offer two first-round picks and pay Jackson the fully guaranteed deal.
Both Jackson and the Ravens have said publicly they desire a long-term partnership, but it’s clear both sides cannot come to an agreement on a deal.
