Football fans are accusing the Detroit Lions’ latest roster addition of “generational ring chasing” after agreeing to a contract with the club on Monday.
On Wednesday morning, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the three-time Pro Bowler has signed with the Lions. Pelissero added that Ertz will start on the practice squad, but the team will promote him to the main roster for Sunday’s NFC Championship tilt with the San Francisco 49ers.
Ertz had been a free agent for nearly two months, having been waived by the Arizona Cardinals back on Nov. 30. Now that he’s joining a final four team ahead of Conference Championship weekend, fans are accusing Ertz of “generational ring chasing”.

Ertz won a Super Bowl 52 ring with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 season, even catching the game-winning touchdown pass from Nick Foles late in the game. But there’s nothing wrong with pursuing a second championship ring at this stage of his career, and Ertz’s Super Bowl experience could serve as a big boost to the Lions.
Detroit is playing in its first NFC Championship Game since the 1991 season, after all. The 49ers, meanwhile, are playing in their fourth NFC Championship Game in five years and are just four years removed from a Super Bowl 54 appearance.
The winner of Sunday’s NFC title clash will face the victor of the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 11.
