The AP Comeback Player of the Year Award will likely be handed to a different category of players moving forward, and NFL fans have a suggestion in mind.
The Associated Press clarified the criteria for said award this week, indicating that the winner should be someone who overcomes an injury or illness and not just a player who has a good year after a crappy season.
“The spirit of the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award is to honor a player who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season,” AP senior NFL writer Rob Maaddi revealed on Tuesday, per ProFootballTalk.
Things began trending in that direction after Geno Smith won the award in 2022. He made his mark as a starter with the Seattle Seahawks after being a backup the year before, but he didn’t overcome an illness or injury.
That also turned out to be the case when Joe Flacco won it last year. He led the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs after his career had taken a downturn.

Players such as Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson, Nick Chub, Kirk Cousins, and Anthony Richardson will see their chances of being named Comeback Player of the Year increase significantly under the new criteria.
We hope Russell Wilson and Zach Wilson weren’t looking forward to winning it as they’re probably going to be disappointed.
