Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott has landed himself a meeting with an AFC club in the midst of NFL training camp season.
According to a report from theScore’s Jordan Schultz, the two-time rushing champion is visiting with the New England Patriots today.
Back in March, the Dallas Cowboys released Elliott in a cap-saving move. They placed the franchise tag on Tony Pollard, opting to move forward with the first-time 1,000-yard rusher as their RB1.
Despite missing two games last season, and despite having to share the backfield with Pollard, “Zeke” finished with 876 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. Had he played all 17 games. Elliott could have very well hit 1,000 rushing yards for the fifth time in his career.
Though he’s not an explosive top-five running back anymore, Elliott remains reliable in goal-line situations. On top of that, he remains one of the best running backs in pass protection.
The Patriots’ backfield is led by third-year standout Rhamondre Stevenson, who crossed 1,000 yards rushing as a sophomore. The Patriots have consistently fielded one of football’s best rushing offenses under Bill Belichick, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they opted to take a no-risk move on Elliott.
