The 2019 offseason was quite the bust one for the Dallas Cowboys as they locked a number of their young stars with lucrative contracts.
DeMarcus Lawrence, La’el Collins and Jaylon Smith all earned new contracts this summer.
Coming in real late was Ezekiel Elliott after he held out from training camp and preseason in order to get paid right now. He ended up signing a six-year contract extension worth $90 million with $50 million guaranteed in the week leading up to Dallas’ season-opener against the New York Giants.
$90 million was certainly a lot, but it actually wasn’t close to what he actually wanted.
Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram revealed Elliott wanted “top wide receiver money.”
“It was for top wide receiver money – think more than Odell Beckham but under the $22 million annually that Julio Jones just got from the Atlanta Falcons – and $110 million in total to make him the highest paid player in Cowboys history.”
Elliott and his reps likely knew they would have to come way down from that, but when negotiating money, why not start high to see how much you can get.
