Kevin Colbert, retiring as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ general manager after the April draft, has one major assignment before he goes and that’s replacing retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Colbert met with local reporters for his annual pre-combine presser and stated if the 2022 season began today, Mason Rudolph would be the team’s starting quarterback.
“If we started a season today, Mason would be our starter, and we’re excited to see where that can go,” Colbert said. “Mason’s 5-4-1 as an NFL starter, albeit in a backup kind of role, but we’re excited to see what is next for Mason.”
On today’s episode of Get Up, former Steelers player and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark had some strong words regarding the potential QB1 status of Rudolph.
“If Mason Rudolph is the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers entering 2022, they are no longer the Pittsburgh Steelers I love or the fans of Pittsburgh love,” he said. “They are no longer the team that decides every offseason, ‘We are going to try to compete for a championship.
“Mason Rudolph is a very average NFL quarterback. Not an average NFL starter,” Clark added. “We have to look at the film and realize what the film says. This isn’t a guy that can beat Lamar Jackson. This isn’t a guy that can beat Joe Burrow. He certainly can’t compete with the Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allens and Justin Herberts of the world.
“I this is what the Pittsburgh Steelers are doing, they’re saying that in 2022, ‘We do not want to win a championship.’”

Rudolph has logged a 5-4-1 starting record as a replacement for Ben Roethlisberger. He has looked nothing like starting quarterback when he touches the field. Arguably, his most memorable moment is being hit in the head by his own helmet by Myles Garrett in a game that the team lost.
In his three-year career, he’s completed 61.5 percent of his attempts for 2,366 yards, 16 TDs, 11 interceptions and an 80.9 passer rating.
