Finding a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers is pretty hard to do these days, but former Packers wide receiver James Jones believes the 49ers may have actually found that guy.
During a recent edition of NFL Network’s Total Access, Jones raved about Trey Lance’s potential as the starting quarterback of the 49ers.
“I believe we’re looking at a bonafide superstar, like Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers,” Jones said. “We had a small sample size of Aaron Rodgers, but all you heard out of the locker room and the people around Aaron was, ‘Just wait. You wait and see.’ That was the same thing for Patrick Mahomes, and that’s the same thing we’re hearing about Trey Lance.”
Former first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk also has no doubts about the young QB’s ability to lead the team, going as far as calling Lance “special.”
“I’ve seen a whole lot from him, especially since we’ve started this offseason program, how much he’s grown, just seeing him throw the football, leading the locker room, connecting with guys. Yeah, we have a special quarterback.”

Selected No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft after San Francisco pulled off a blockbuster pre-draft trade, it always seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Lance would take over as a sophomore.
When on the field in 2021, he played pretty well in limited action.
As a rookie last year, Lance threw for 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 168 yards and another score.
