Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is dealing with a high ankle sprain that he suffered in Saturday’s AFC Divisional Round tilt against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the 27-year-old has insisted that he’ll play in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Dr. David Chao, known by his Twitter handle @ProFootball Doc, spent 17 years with the San Diego (Now Los Angeles) Chargers organization.
In a YouTube video, Chao discussed Mahomes’ injury and detailed what we should expect from the likely 2022 league MVP winner. Chao explained that Mahomes will not be 100 percent for the contest on Sunday.
“Will he be good from the pocket? Yes, because it’s Mahomes magic. Will he be mobile? Not really. There’s no way that Mahomes will be a hundred percent…He’s gonna miss a lot of practice time, be limited at best this week. But knowing Patrick Mahomes, he will play and start this game…But it’ll be more of the same. Off foot, arm angle changes, but it’s Mahomes. He can still be effective.”
Mahomes had to miss some action against Jacksonville to have his ankle checked out. Backup Chad Henne filled in and led the team on a clutch 12-play, 98-yard drive that culminated with a touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce.
Mahomes completed 22 of 30 pass attempts for 195 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in the win against Jacksonville. The Chiefs will host the AFC Championship Game for a fifth straight year, looking to win their third conference crown in five years.
